Are you dreaming of experiencing the Northern Lights? The spectacular light show is one of the most unique things Lofoten has to offer!
When can you see the northern lights?
If you plan to travel to Lofoten to experience the northern lights, you should schedule your trip somewhere between the end of August and mid-April. The possibilities of seeing the northern lights depend on the weather and aurora activity. The darkest months are best, as it should be both dark enough and cloudless. Lofoten is one of the best places in the world to experience the phenomenon. That’s because the northern lights oval lies above Lofoten and with a view directly to the north you can see the northern lights from Lofoten’s outer side with an undisturbed horizon.
Nature’s very own fireworks
Are you curious about how the northern lights occures? Northern lights are a light phenomenon that occurs when particles emitted by the sun hit the earth’s magnetic field. The magnetic field guides the particles along magnetic lines in the atmosphere above the polar regions. It is when the particles hit the gases in the Earth’s atmosphere that the light we call aurora occurs approximately 100 kilometers above our heads. Seeing the northern lights, also called the Aurora Borealis, dance across the sky is an experience you won’t forget!
