Did you know that twice a day – just before sunrise and just after sunset – you have the opportunity to experience the absolutely fantastic light that the blue hour is known for? It typically lasts 20-40 minutes, depending on the weather and where in the world you are.
In Lofoten, the period where it’s only darkness i short, less than four weeks, from about 7 December to the beginning of January, the sun hides behind the horizon. And because of the twilight effect, there is quite a lot of light in the middle of the day, it can often be experienced as a blue light and can be called the «blue hour».
The blue hour comes from the French expression l’heure bleue, which refers to the period of twilight every morning and evening when it is neither full daylight nor completely dark, and the sky has a different blue color than during the day. The phenomenon is due to the Rayleigh scattering of sunlight.
The blue hour is considered special because of the quality of light at this time of day, and both the expression itself and the natural phenomenon it refers to are widely used in an artistic context and in popular culture.
