Nusfjord is perhaps at its most magical in winter! But why?

Darkness comes with its very own palette of blue tones, and regardless of whether you want to spend the winter days on long walks where you listen to the silence of nature, or you want to throw yourself into exciting activities and experiences, Nusfjord is the perfect winter destination! Here are eight good reasons to visit Lofoten in winter:

1. Kayak

If you like kayaking, we can make you happy that Nusfjord is a fantastic kayaking destination in winter too. There is something quite magical about paddling a kayak in the distinctive blue light during the dark – all alone on the water, with the seabirds sailing around in the sky.

2. The local food

The food in Nusfjord is something very special. At Restaurant Karoline, we update the menu several times a year, to adapt it to the ingredients that are in season. At our restaurants you can always experience delicious food from local delicacies.

3. Lofoten fishing

The famous skrei, which migrate in droves to Lofoten every winter to spawn, have been the hub of life here ever since the Viking Age. Much of the local culture is centered around catching, drying and exporting this wonderful raw material – and not least creative ways of preparing it! Join our fishing boat Elltor and experience Lofoten fishing up close.

4. The climate

The climate in Nusfjord is surprisingly mild when you consider that the archipelago lies north of the Arctic Circle, thanks to the Gulf Stream which brings warm ocean currents from more southerly latitudes and ensures that the sea never freezes over in winter. This is one of the reasons why people have been able to live here for thousands of years – but you should still dress in proper winter clothes, of course!

5. Northern Lights

Winter means time to experience the magical northern lights in Lofoten. This magical, dancing light that waves across the sky is easier to spot during the dark, and Lofoten is in the middle of the «northern lights belt» itself. In short, there are great chances to experience this phenomenon here in the winter – and perhaps even see its reflections on the water on the night-black sea.

6. Christmas

Nusfjord in winter is pure wonderland for children, not least because Christmas celebrations start early in this region. The snow comes earlier, and there are many Christmas-related activities in the area. Join us in cutting down the Christmas tree, meet Santa Claus and get into the real Christmas spirit.

7. Ski season

The steep and dramatic mountains with pointed peaks that give this archipelago its distinct character are well worth a visit all year round – but in winter you really get a touch of the polar explorer feeling, as the hordes of summer tourists are gone and the incredible silence as nothing but snow can provide, dominates the landscape. Both skis and snowshoes are great means of getting around the snow, and the surroundings and the view are simply majestic.

8. «Frozen»

When you visit Lofoten in winter, you also see what the Disney designers saw when they were looking for inspiration for the kingdom of Arendelle in the famous Frost movies. The kingdom where Elsa and Anna live in the films is modeled after a bunch of local communities in Norway, and especially the colorful houses and dramatic mountains in Lofoten. How about stepping into a Disney movie in the real world?
