April In Nusfjord

There is a quiet moment in Lofoten when winter begins to soften, but does not yet disappear. In April, snow still rests on the mountains, reflecting a returning light that grows stronger each day. The sun lingers low on the horizon, stretching mornings and evenings into long, gentle hours of gold and blue. It is a time that invites you to slow down—to sit, to watch, to breathe. Along the shore, life returns.

Birds fill the air

Spring reveals itself in the smallest details.

An eagle gliding above, oystercatchers calling across the shore, eiders drifting with the tide—the stillness of winter softening into a living rhythm.

For a closer encounter, a high-speed RIB safari may reveal sea eagles overhead or even orcas moving through the fjords in pursuit of herring.

On land, a guided hike offers a quieter way to notice the changing light and landscape.

Spring Flora

A single Scilla siberica pushing through snow—small, vivid, and quietly defiant. Its deep blue petals open to the cold light, a first sign that winter is loosening its grip.

Around it, moss glows, buds catch the light, and beneath the surface, everything begins to move.

This is not a season of arrival, but of becoming — a quiet return of colour, warmth, and life.

Seabirds Return to Nusfjord

In Nusfjord, spring is not only seen — it is heard.

Before the mountains begin to change, before the first true greens appear, the village fills with sound. High above the rorbuer and along the wooden facades, the first seabirds return.

The kittiwakes are back.

Around twenty-five individuals have already arrived, settling into familiar corners of the village. They circle, call, and gather — restless and purposeful — preparing for the breeding season ahead.

Their cries echo between the buildings and out across the harbour, weaving into the rhythm of daily life. It is a sound that belongs here. A sign that the cycle has begun again.

They do not wait for full spring. They trust its return.

There is something grounding in their presence. A quiet reminder of continuity, of place, of belonging.

To stand beneath them, to listen, to watch their effortless movement against the Arctic sky — is to be gently drawn into that rhythm.

In Nusfjord, spring arrives on wings.

Fotografiska in Nusfjord - Opening Event

This April, Nusfjord becomes more than a village—it becomes a living gallery.

Through a unique collaboration with Fotografiska, photography moves beyond walls and into the landscape itself. Images appear throughout the harbour and historic rorbuer, shaped by the Arctic light.

At the heart of the exhibition are two internationally acclaimed artists: Rinko Kawauchi, known for her quiet, poetic observations of everyday life and nature, and Elizaveta Porodina, whose work is bold, cinematic, and emotionally expressive. Together, they create a dialogue between intimacy and intensity—set against the raw beauty of Lofoten.

Opening Weekend — 17–19 April

From 17 to 19 April, Nusfjord hosts the official Fotografiska Opening Weekend—a three-day immersive event where art, community, and nature come together.

Guests are invited to experience:
  • A village-wide art walk, where installations meet rorbuer, cliffs, and harbour spaces

  • Artist and community conversations connecting global and local perspectives

  • collaborative culinary evening, blending Fotografiska’s sustainable cuisine with Arctic ingredients
In the stillness of early spring, as light returns and the village awakens, you are invited to slow down, look closer, and experience art as part of the landscape itself.
