About us

Nestled in the dramatic landscape of the Lofoten archipelago, the enchanting fishing village of Nusfjord offers a truly unique and peaceful destination.

Our village carries a long and rich history. Here, our ancestors built a way of life shaped by the rhythms of nature. Today, their legacy and spirit continue to live on in Nusfjord.

A Living Chapter of Lofoten's History

Nusfjord is set in one of Lofoten’s oldest and best-preserved fishing villages, surrounded by steep mountains and the open northern sea. Today, the historic village welcomes guests year-round — in summer under the gentle glow of the midnight sun, and in winter beneath the dancing northern lights.

The journey here winds through the mountain passes of Flakstad, where the landscape opens towards the sea. As you arrive, the pace slows. Traditional fishermen’s cabins stand on wooden stilts along the shoreline, and narrow paths lead through the small harbour where the village has gathered for generations.

The earliest traces of settlement in Nusfjord date back to around 425 BC. For centuries, the village was shaped by the seasonal cod fisheries that brought life and livelihood to this remote corner of Lofoten. During Nusfjord’s fishing heyday, more than a thousand people filled the harbour and surrounding rorbuer. Today, only nineteen residents call the village home, helping preserve the quiet character and deep-rooted traditions that define Nusfjord.

Our Philosophy

Nusfjord reflects the rich culture of Lofoten in an authentic way. Our goal is to share the beauty of this historic village with our guests while preserving its heritage, community, and traditional buildings. We continuously invest in protecting and maintaining the fishing village so that one of Lofoten’s most beautiful gems can be experienced for generations to come.

People are at the heart of everything we do. Our team is dedicated to caring for guests with warmth and hospitality, inspired by the Norwegian spirit of hygge — moments that feel cosy, genuine, and special.

As part of the community on Flakstadøya, we support the development of the local area through responsible and sustainable tourism. Together with local partners, we offer authentic experiences that showcase the nature, culture, and traditions of the valley. In our kitchens, we celebrate Arctic flavours by focusing on fresh, natural, and locally sourced ingredients.

Rooted in Tradition, Guided by Nature

Nusfjord is rooted in authentic experiences and Norwegian traditions. We take pride in caring for the nature, culture, and historic surroundings that make this village so rare and unique.

We work continuously to reduce food waste, develop our menus together with local producers, and operate using renewable energy wherever possible. Many of our experiences are designed to be low-impact, allowing guests to explore Lofoten in a more sustainable way. We are also working toward Environmental Lighthouse certification to guide our continued progress.

As part of Norway’s tourism community, we support the transition toward more responsible, experience-based travel that protects the country’s natural and cultural heritage.

Guests can also take part in our partnership with Hotels for Trees. By choosing to skip daily room cleaning, a tree will be planted on behalf of Nusfjord — a small gesture that helps support forests around the world.

Practical Information

Nusfjord offers a collection of traditional rorbu cabins, once used by fishermen who travelled from across Norway to take part in the seasonal cod fisheries. Today, these historic cabins have been thoughtfully restored and upgraded, allowing guests to experience the rugged charm of the original cabins and village with contemporary comfort.
For those seeking a more crafted, refined stay or a truly private, adventurous escape, Nusfjord offers two distinctive experiences:

The House of Dahl is the village’s most exclusive residence — a five-bedroom villa carefully restored to preserve its historic character. Once home to the Dahl family, who helped shape Nusfjord into a thriving fishing village, the house today offers space, privacy, and a unique connection to the village’s past.

The Isolated Fisherman’s Cabin offers a very different retreat. Reached only by boat and set ten minutes from the village, the cabin stands alone between sea and mountains. With no neighbours and only nature surrounding it, it offers a rare stillness and a chance to truly disconnect in the breathtaking landscape of Lofoten.
